- Specialist Financial Modelling for Product Costing
Hamilton Shaw Consulting has an ongoing engagement with Telstra Technology Innovation & Product to provide specialist financial modelling skills within the Data and IP Enterprise Services product group.
Drawing on many years experience in the IT & Telecommunications industry we use a structured, bottom-up approach (based on ABC and ITIL principles) to develop user friendly, fully validated cost models for data and IP products.
This involves:
- Tailoring our approach to ensure relevance in the Telstra operating structure
- Developing a set of costing principles that are the basis of all models to ensure a common understanding of the approach
- Gathering and interrogating all data relevant to a product cost base including service definitions, business processes, service listings, labour force time recording information, operating and capital expenditure
- Working alongside key technical staff to understand the hardware and software necessary in delivering the service and the utilisation of such equipment
- Working alongside key finance staff to understand the allocation of resource cost pools to products
- Working alongside the relevant Product Managers to understand the product offering, the current customer base and the future direction of the service in order to best tailor the model for business decision making
- Training Telstra staff on the methodology and use of the resultant models to promote knowledge transfer
- Making recommendations on changes within the Telstra finance systems to enhance internal management reporting and cost accountability.
The process provides Product Managers with a high degree of confidence in the models, which they have subsequently used for cost management, product lifecycle management and bid/campaign work amongst other things.
Hamilton Shaw Consulting also provides advice and training to the Finance team on strategic cost management and product profitability reporting.
